Eco Home Pavilion

London Festival of Architecture
The Square Mile, London
2022

Deft.Space, alongside collaborators from Studio DASH, came up with the conceptual design for an Eco Home Pavilion to be erected in London’s Square Mile. Our entry into this competition explored modularity and climate-adaptive design, as a means of tackling the climate crisis in building and in everyday life.

The concept brings together both teams’ shared passions - delivering environmentally sustainable design, whilst developing architecture that facilitates the sharing of resources economically and equitably. The proposal challenges our culture of individualism and extraction, gesturing instead toward a future where communality is expressed in the design of our homes. As such, the Eco Home regards space as a resource, to be shared, traded, and donated amongst neighbours, rather than commodified and hoarded by the few.

Flexibility is at the heart of this concept, as well as ease of assembly and disassembly. The building’s envelope is dynamic, adapting to changing weather conditions and seasons. The modular rooms are designed to be infinitely demountable and reconfigurable, and the Eco Home is able to grow and shrink as the occupant transitions through different life stages. After being fabricated, assembled, shared, traded, and rebuilt, the modular cassettes will biodegrade and return to the Earth, whilst non-biodegradable elements can be recycled into new materials.
