231 Old Kent Road

Southwark Council
Southwark, London
2022

231 Old Kent Road community hub was designed from RIBA Stages 1 - 4 for Southwark Council and the community group, the Southwark Young Advisors. The Southwark Young Advisors are a group of young people from ethnically diverse backgrounds aged between 16 to 21 years old, all sharing the aspiration to create change within their local community. 231 Old Kent Road is envisioned by Southwark Council as a key part of its regeneration strategy, including its engagement with under-represented community groups in the regeneration of the Old Kent Road.

We held two co-design workshops, an informal exhibition with local young people led by the Southwark Young Advisors and a walk-around the building. The proposals developed into final designs for an inclusive and welcoming community space on the ground floor, training rooms, workspaces and a chill-out space primarily for the Southwark Young Advisors on the first and second floors. Health and Wellbeing design principles from the WELL Building Standards were incorporated into the final proposals. Wayfinding strategies incorporating colour, braille and tactile surfaces weaved through the building to create a multi-sensory experience.
